Steve Chab here. When I became a student of Messiah, I noticed that modern music made by Jesus-followers lacked quality and creativity in lyricism, musicality, and production.
I wondered, If God, the Author of Creation, gave artists the ability to create, then how can the music of a God-lover lack creativity?
After years of frustration, I decided to do something about it.
I partnered with the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship (Project Olympus) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Business of Music professor, Lance LaDuke. Under their guidance, I researched local and national artists and arts organizations. My wife, Elissa, and I conducted nearly 40 interviews.
What blocks artists from creating quality art?
Most churches don't foster artists, cultivate creativity, or host concerts. Many artists find that the Church doesn't understand the important role that art plays in society. One respondent said, Look to see who has more weight on society — the pastor or the artist? It's always the artist!

In 2021, we founded Vibrant Verse to unite, train, and showcase local artists of faith.
Steve and Elissa married in 2013. They love Messiah Jesus and live with lots of children and one red Pit bull. Elissa teaches group painting classes (opens in new window) and creates beautiful, handcrafted cards. Steve creates music, art, and code (opens in new window) and fronts Steve Chab Band (opens in new window).
